RAISING THE LITTLE BARR'S

Our Christmas 2013 Recap

Charlene2 Comments
Amidst the holiday hustle and bustle, the non-frigid temperatures, and the chaotic work/travel schedules, we found time for magic. But really, it's not about finding 'time' for magic, because the magic of Christmas is happening all around. No matter how hectic lives seem leading up to Christmas, there is always the spirit and magic surrounding us. Just take a deep breath and a moment to relax and you'll notice it. We sure did. With family, Christmas light drives, delicious food, church, love, and Christmas music, it surely felt magical.

So magical that we even found time to build our first gingerbread home. It may have happened on Christmas Eve, but better late than never {just like this recap post!}

This whole holiday break for us was magical -- Christmas magical and Disney magical -- does it get more magical than that? Disney post to follow, but for now, I'm not sure if it gets much better than 3 little girls faces lighting up on Christmas morning!

Truly a holiday break for the books, again :)

Christmas Eve was spent with the Barr's - a wonderful evening filled with heartwarming traditions. We love us some traditions 'round here. A pot of corn chowder filling the house with mouthwatering aromas. I could certainly go for it right now as a matter of fact. Church, gifts, soup and the best array of sandwich goodies you can imagine, along with festive drinks and desserts. And nothing beats said traditions more than carrying them out with this group of people. It is, after all, these people who make up this tradition year after year and that's what makes it heartwarming. Grandparents traveling the long haul from South Dakota to make these traditions whole is truly special.

And while I wish I could have captured more moments from the day, I'll just be honest and say I've been a camera slacker. {Until last week, that is. -- I took a ton of photos in the week following Christmas} But thankful that I had Uncle Tom with my camera hung around his neck on Christmas Day. That helped capture many of the following memories to be thankful for :)

Cousins waking up together on Christmas morning is such a treat for them. We slept at my sister's house and the girls all actually slept in, then came out in a line -- oldest to youngest, with the first showing the next the right way to go. Each with their eyes lit up and smiles on their face, they ran straight for the Christmas tree and immediately pulled out any tissue paper from bags, pacing quickly from one to the next. Then to sit on their seats in awe of all they saw under the tree. It was like a moment of reflection for them. The calm before the {awesome} storm.

Then they climbed right into the wagon and Uncle Donnie took 'em for a little stroll around the house.

Thankful little girlies :)

And well, you better watch out or this gal might snatch some stocking stuffers from right under you. Sneaky little gal she is.

E got Daddy a tie for the first time - and I suspect there will be many more times throughout her life that that will happen. A Christmas tie for a fancy guy ;)

{yes, that would be a doll shoe hanging out of her mouth....inneresting..}

Following presents was a deliciously festive brunch, and Grandma came over to help with the food, followed by the rest of the family shortly after. I sure do love having a big family. Always a fun time :)

And of course, as every other child on Christmas afternoon does, we came outside to play with the new trikes, big wheels, power wheels, bikes, etc. {Or is that just a Florida thing because it's not cold..?!}

Girl time spent in the kitchen -- I think this is becoming a yearly traditional photo with us 4. Ha :)

And more relaxing, hanging outside, playing, talking -- even hugging apparently.

There were lazy moments, and of course, crazy moments.

We decorated wish lanterns and watched them fly high into the sky for the second year in a row -- reaching heaven to grant Christmas wishes to our lost loved ones spending the holiday up there. {a post will follow!}

This time spent with the family was more than we could ask for. Everyone together, under one roof -- a rare occasion to have ALL of us together - even the out-of-staters. So thankful for a holiday spent this way.

Lil E spent much of the day with her favorite, Johny, just like Johny used to spend with me :)

And we all spent the day with each other, our favorites!

Between Christmas Eve and Christmas, the holidays were spent exactly how we like them, with family, friends, great food and drink, and wonderful memories to keep. We hope you all had just as wonderful of a Christmas with memories to cherish forever!

MERRY {belated} CHRISTMAS FROM THE BARR'S!

Oh yes, and here is our 2013 Christmas Card :)

Our Christmas decor, stockings, and little Christmas village people are feeling a bit lonely this year. And that train that's used to burning it's energy by running circles around our tree all day and night? Well I think that's a bit lonely as well. Maybe it's the amount of Toy Story movies I've been watching lately, but I'm pretty sure they are laying their "heads" low in deep thought wondering if they've been abandoned due to our growing family. Boxed up, stacked and buried in a cold, dark storage unit is not exactly where the Christmas festiveness should take place.

Sit tight, little Christmas toys and decor -- we are not pulling an Andy and growing up on you. Next year, you will be back up on our shelves and feeling the love and festiveness around you. Please don't fret. You've not been replaced, but rather substituted by the in-laws decor for just one season.

Promise :)

Meanwhile, our little girl has been rehearsing her best Christmas classics. I am sure she will be the star of the show, our little music prodigy ;) Ha, I kid, I kid.

She donned her best elf hat and strolled through aisles of a magic forest full of enchanted Christmas trees. Also known as a Christmas tree stand.
It may have been 85 degrees out, but the magic was still felt. Quite different from her first Christmas tree picking extravaganza in 30 degree weather as a 3 week old.

We finally picked a winner. She approved. And had the honor of placing the star on top of the tree. Special lady, eh?!

We've been counting down the days -- trying to fill each with fun and cheer -- til we celebrate with family, good food and holly jolly times. Our Christmas season hasn't been completely full of Christmas shopping, music, and festive fun, though. We've been trying, that's for sure! There has been traveling for J's interviews this month and momma was real busy with Etsy orders. There may not have been Christmas cookies baked by yours truly this year, but my spirit has been there at heart! I've browsed through recipe books and pondered at each I'd love to try, but that's as far as my little heart has made it. I even bought a gingerbread house to make for the first time, and still haven't gotten to it. Things may be a little different this year, but still the most wonderful time of the year!

This little beauty makes the season only about 12409825 times better! Christmas time with a baby is just abso-freakin-lutely amazing.

Spending time with family, and of course singing loud for all to hear is the best way to spread Christmas cheer! {elf}

We've driven around to gaze at the lights, watched festive movies and all. Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, Cat in the Hat Christmas, Elf, and of course all Home Alones, have graced us with it's presence on the TV screen. WITH Santa jammies and socks on. That, my friends, makes me one happy lady!

Our trip to the big man in the red suit called for one sad baby. This wasn't necessarily your typical mouth-wide-open-hysterical-screams-and-tears-flowing-like-crazy kinda 1 year old visit, but rather just a sad baby. Sad to sit on a strange man's lap. Puppy dog eyes sad. And when I see this among everyone else's Santa photos being posted online, I surely question why the hell we do this to our children?!? Ha...Sorry baby! I guess we just all think who wouldn't want to see Santa Claus?!

I'm realizing we have still done much to celebrate the Christmas season, as I now recap in photos. It just feels busy, and a little different without our stuff and E's first stocking we specially picked for her last year, BUT busy is good and STUFF doesn't matter!

Family | Fun | Good Times. That is what matters.

And Baby E has been having a blast celebrating the season. She is especially happy to have a new hiding place behind the Christmas tree.

I don't believe there is one Christmas song she won't bust a move to. Girl is a dancing queen with rhythm and moves. It seems as though she loves the Christmas season just as much as me! Thank goodness!

Just for this year, we've traded in 'Our first Christmas together' ornament for Daddy as a little tyke. Not much to complain about there! Cute boy :)

And cute little girl :)

We're jam packing the rest of our holiday season with as much fun as we can. {and cleaning/wrapping/getting ready} but I can assure you that it will certainly be a season to look back on and love. We've got 3 more days to make memories for Christmas 2013.

And I can assure you we will do just that!

Merry, merry Everything! To you and yours during this most wonderful time of the year!

family days and another phase

We're on our way - continuing along this med school journey - with about 5 1/2 months until the sweet sound of that graduation song fills our ears and we sit back to cheer on our Doctor Daddy. I started this blog during the first year of medical school, about 6 months after moving up to Georgia, as an engaged working 23 year old gal. Oh how the years have changed in a short amount of time. How we've transitioned into the newlywed life and created traditions and values in our marriage, moving on to the birth of our first child, in addition to several moves (including cross-state). It sure has been quite the journey throughout these four years of medical school.

And they're not over yet! We've still got 5 1/2 months of this journey's memories that will make up 'the med school years'. For now, we are soaking up family days. Come 6-7 months from now, the beloved/dreaded/can't-believe-it's almost here residency might possibly drain the family days from our schedules. I surely hope not, but let's be honest. How did your doctors get to know all that they do? It wasn't from sitting at home with their families every day, that's for sure. (Sadly! ha) So on those days we do get, we've just gotta make them worth it!

Park days, museum days, beach days, even sleeping in and cuddling up together doing nothing days -- they all count in my book as a great family day. We are lucky to have the amount of quality time together lately that we have -- even in the midst of the interview trail and hubby being out of state every other week!

I've referenced 'Saved By The Bell' before in terms of our life. How there are 'The College Years', high school, middle school, etc. It's easy to categorize the different phases of our lives based on all the places we have lived, and the phases we have been through. Our high school days, our college days in Tallahassee, our med school days in Atlanta, our 3rd year clinical rotation days in Warner Robins, and now our 4th year rotations in Florida. Come March 2014, we will find out where our residency days will take us. It sure is interesting not knowing where we will be moving on to next, but fun at the same time. We try very hard to live our lives one day at a time and not wish our days away to get to that 'one day' when we can settle in a house for more than a year, have a steady income, and get to that point in life where we know we are where we're meant to be. We've been talking about that a lot lately -- just really trying to not wish the days away, and trying our hardest to make these days amazing - because they are.

We look back on each little phase, each year of living somewhere new, each stage of dating, engagement, marriage, pregnancy, baby life, etc. and have wonderful memories from each. Even from the places we weren't so excited about to begin with. We've realized we can make a home wherever we are. We've realized we can make a life wherever we are. It's more about having each other and wonderful people in our lives who support us and have fun with us. With each other, our families, and friends, we made each phase wonderful so far and we truly love looking back.

Looking back and reminiscing on the good times leads us to also look forward at the mysterious blank pages ahead. Where will it take us? What memories will we make? Will our children have just as great of memories as us? That's where we need to remind ourselves that it's all about what we make of it. We need to help make the memories of our children's childhood, and guide them in the right direction to make the right decisions, leading them to have the wonderful memories we have been blessed with.

Of course, there will be rough patches, as we all have had as well throughout childhood, but as the good times have far outweighed the bad, that's what makes up my memories. The good times, the fun times, the amazing people.

We hope no matter where this crazy journey leads us next, we will bring with us our past memories of each phase and learn from the lows, as well as bring with us the wonderful memories to keep us going strong, happy, and most of all supportive of each other and all our future endeavors with some amazing children. We hope we don't ever wish our days away and just continue enjoying 'the now' - whether we barely see much of each other during some crazy residency times or not (and I do hope that's not the case!)

One thing is for sure - we're enjoying our family days one at a time and loving each other with all our heart and soul - just as we should!
