RAISING THE LITTLE BARR'S

tis the season

It's quiet in the house tonight. The girls are sleeping, J has been working at the hospital since before we woke up today, and Momma finally gets a moment to sit back and reflect on the most wonderful time of the year.

Confession: When I picture Christmastime in my head - especially with littles now - I picture singing Christmas songs next to a sparkly lit tree topped with an angel, baking cookies - topping them with pretty sprinkles and being covered in flour from head to toe, cozy nights in front of the TV watching our favorite Christmas classics, and visions of sugar plums dancing in my head as I fall asleep.

Reality: All of that happening + chaos + whining kiddies + a very disappointed sneaky toddler who finds Christmas gifts and gets very mad at Momma when she takes them away to hide again + crazy shopping trips where babies would rather be at home snuggling + sweating my butt off while trying to keep said kiddies entertained all day and night while also trying to get work orders out on time.

Only thing that matters in that reality bit: The fact that the way I picture Christmastime in my head happily happens in between the chaos of the season. And those memories are the ONLY ones I will remember year after year!

The warmth and coziness of our home during the season, a Christmas song-singing toddler, pretty cookies, home decorating, tree trimming, festive events, Christmas jammies, holiday movies and reading Christmas books galore -- those are just some of my favorite moments I will always cherish with my family throughout the holidays and wish for year after year.

It may have taken us several nights to decorate the tree in between J's crazy schedule, but that just meant more nights of memories, and more nights for E to learn all about Christmas traditions. Perhaps one of her favorites: train time with Daddy.

Seeing her eyes light up at the first sound of the 'alllll aboard!' followed by the fun sounds and sight of the train chugging around the tree was pure magic for all of us. Gosh, my momma heart was freakin' happy in that moment watching E's eyes as I laid back on a cozy, designated 'Christmastime only' blanket with Baby A! Yes, I thank my lucky stars every day to be so blessed with the family I have.

There is just something about the holiday season that makes me so, so giddy. The Christmas station is programmed in in my car and there is no changing it until after New Years - yes, I am one of those. But you should already know that by now. I prance around the house jammin' out to Sounds of the Season in my loudest singing voice possible. It makes my girlies smile, and join in of course. E may think that every Christmas song is 'Jingle Bells', and I'm perfectly fine with that! Starting her young, you know.

Joy to the freakin' world, it's Christmastime, friends!

Being able to do Christmas crafts with E, like the wreath above, might possibly be one of my favorite things about having children! ha..I do love it!

Whilst many of you out there get annoyed with the early Christmas music and festiveness, I am quite the opposite. Sometimes I wish the Christmas season would last half the year! But then I remember it wouldn't be as special ;) I do wait until after Thanksgiving to get all festive, though. No worries!

We got to add a new stocking to the mantle this year. And the significance of that brings much joy to my life!

Our first timer is takin' it all in this year -- learning the ropes for next year and every year to follow. I think her favorite might be the cuddles on our homemade blanket beds as we watch the classic movies and Christmas specials together. Home Alone tops the charts for me, hands down.

She's enjoyed sitting tree-side, watching us string lights around the tree and accessorize it with the most special ornaments (and non-special, i.e. a pickle) we have.

You know what else gets my holiday spirits bursting through the roof -- all the scents of the season! That's what real Christmas trees are for! + festive candles and baked goodies, too! They say that scents can trigger long-forgotten memories, and what better time than Christmastime to trigger childhood memories.

"Pretty, momma! Smells pretty!"

The smell of the wide array of Christmas cookies GG baked while here -- oh yesss, the scents brought back so many memories! And the taste as well -- she baked some of her originals she makes year after year, and E couldn't have been happier.

"Momma, this so fun!! Cookies! Fun!"

Have you ever seen the Easter bunny baking Christmas Cookies? Now ya have!

Hearing her sweet voice say that while baking cookies with GG in the kitchen reminded me of all the times I'd bake with GG when I was younger (and even in college, too, let's be honest!) And they used GG's very old sifter - the same sifter my mom would use while baking Christmas cookies in the kitchen as a kid with GG. Oh, the memories that sifter has witnessed..haha ;)

Spending time with family has been wonderful when they've come to visit, and we are so thankful we will be able to spend Christmas Eve & Day with our families, even if only going down for a very short while! As a physician, there will be plenty of times J has to work holidays, but this year we are getting lucky. Thank goodness as it is Baby A's very first Christmas!

Spending whatever short amount of time we get with J while he's here at the house, we cherish. Seeing festive touches around our own very first home, I cherish. And making Christmas memories with my babies, I really, really cherish!

Daddy bought E her very own Christmas tree and the happiness it's brought her is just adorable. She is sure to tell everyone about the "E tree" and the "Daddy tree". Mommy and Baby A don't have their own trees, in her eyes! ha.

Caught her admiring her tree one afternoon.

Tis the season to be jolly.

Falalalala. La la la laaaa!

Hope you're having a wonderful Christmas season - from our tacky family to yours!

it's the most wonderful time of the year...

Our Christmas decor, stockings, and little Christmas village people are feeling a bit lonely this year. And that train that's used to burning it's energy by running circles around our tree all day and night? Well I think that's a bit lonely as well. Maybe it's the amount of Toy Story movies I've been watching lately, but I'm pretty sure they are laying their "heads" low in deep thought wondering if they've been abandoned due to our growing family. Boxed up, stacked and buried in a cold, dark storage unit is not exactly where the Christmas festiveness should take place.

Sit tight, little Christmas toys and decor -- we are not pulling an Andy and growing up on you. Next year, you will be back up on our shelves and feeling the love and festiveness around you. Please don't fret. You've not been replaced, but rather substituted by the in-laws decor for just one season.

Promise :)

Meanwhile, our little girl has been rehearsing her best Christmas classics. I am sure she will be the star of the show, our little music prodigy ;) Ha, I kid, I kid.

She donned her best elf hat and strolled through aisles of a magic forest full of enchanted Christmas trees. Also known as a Christmas tree stand.
It may have been 85 degrees out, but the magic was still felt. Quite different from her first Christmas tree picking extravaganza in 30 degree weather as a 3 week old.

We finally picked a winner. She approved. And had the honor of placing the star on top of the tree. Special lady, eh?!

We've been counting down the days -- trying to fill each with fun and cheer -- til we celebrate with family, good food and holly jolly times. Our Christmas season hasn't been completely full of Christmas shopping, music, and festive fun, though. We've been trying, that's for sure! There has been traveling for J's interviews this month and momma was real busy with Etsy orders. There may not have been Christmas cookies baked by yours truly this year, but my spirit has been there at heart! I've browsed through recipe books and pondered at each I'd love to try, but that's as far as my little heart has made it. I even bought a gingerbread house to make for the first time, and still haven't gotten to it. Things may be a little different this year, but still the most wonderful time of the year!

This little beauty makes the season only about 12409825 times better! Christmas time with a baby is just abso-freakin-lutely amazing.

Spending time with family, and of course singing loud for all to hear is the best way to spread Christmas cheer! {elf}

We've driven around to gaze at the lights, watched festive movies and all. Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, Cat in the Hat Christmas, Elf, and of course all Home Alones, have graced us with it's presence on the TV screen. WITH Santa jammies and socks on. That, my friends, makes me one happy lady!

Our trip to the big man in the red suit called for one sad baby. This wasn't necessarily your typical mouth-wide-open-hysterical-screams-and-tears-flowing-like-crazy kinda 1 year old visit, but rather just a sad baby. Sad to sit on a strange man's lap. Puppy dog eyes sad. And when I see this among everyone else's Santa photos being posted online, I surely question why the hell we do this to our children?!? Ha...Sorry baby! I guess we just all think who wouldn't want to see Santa Claus?!

I'm realizing we have still done much to celebrate the Christmas season, as I now recap in photos. It just feels busy, and a little different without our stuff and E's first stocking we specially picked for her last year, BUT busy is good and STUFF doesn't matter!

Family | Fun | Good Times. That is what matters.

And Baby E has been having a blast celebrating the season. She is especially happy to have a new hiding place behind the Christmas tree.

I don't believe there is one Christmas song she won't bust a move to. Girl is a dancing queen with rhythm and moves. It seems as though she loves the Christmas season just as much as me! Thank goodness!

Just for this year, we've traded in 'Our first Christmas together' ornament for Daddy as a little tyke. Not much to complain about there! Cute boy :)

And cute little girl :)

We're jam packing the rest of our holiday season with as much fun as we can. {and cleaning/wrapping/getting ready} but I can assure you that it will certainly be a season to look back on and love. We've got 3 more days to make memories for Christmas 2013.

And I can assure you we will do just that!

Merry, merry Everything! To you and yours during this most wonderful time of the year!

Magical, whimsical, joyful, and more -- words to describe Christmas time.

While I'm usually positive, upbeat, and motivated, I must admit that I haven't really been able to describe my December in any of those words. December has been a stressful month around these parts (my work, J's school, and lots of things in between), but this past weekend was just what the doctor prescribed. With our student doctor's beginning winter break on Friday, it turned into a magical, whimsical, and joyful weekend for all of us. And we needed it.

Carly and Brian had us over Thursday night, and I told her the exact same thing. I wasn't thrilled at first about going to hang out with friends, because when you're in a gloomy mood, ya sometimes just aren't feeling it. I was later thrilled that we dragged our butts out to be with friends, because it was this exact moment sitting on their couch with friends when I realized, 'I love this.'

J and I were sitting legs crossed, Dave beside us playing Dave Matthews' Crash Into Me, Christmas candles lit to set the mood, Carly and Brian handing out cookies, and just relaxing on a weeknight with friends. Thank goodness for the amazing friends we've made here. Nights like this make me happy.

Dave had his traditional pancake brunch for all of us...we all arrived wearing our comfiest PJ's, sipped on mimosas, and reminisced on Christmas memories while watching Charlie Brown Christmas.

To celebrate the start of J's winter break, I baked some cookies and he brought in some Christmas cheer with beautiful flowers.

I also made our friends a couple batches of chocolate-covered pretzels. Yummy!

Do you remember our beer and pretzel tour of Atlanta over the summer? Well, we were ready for another tour. So to end the week, we made up went on our own sweet potato fry tour of Atlanta. We called it 'Sweep Atlanta.' Sweet Potato = Sweep. Get it?! Okay. It was great!

The guys donned their best 3/4 sleeve plaid button downs..I missed the memo on that -- bummer.

More on this to come - look out for a blog post :) But for now, you can rest assured knowing we had a successful 'Sweep!'

And the very next night was the 'Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.' Seriously, who knew there were so many damn sweaters out there that are oh so hideous?!

Check us out...

I sure did feel like we had stepped back in time a tad. And how did someone else have my SAME EXACT sweater? Who knew mine would be so popular...

J was a finalist for the men's sweater contest. It came down to him and Dave, but honestly, how could you beat this size 7 little girl's sweater with an extremely classy tattoo sticking out?

Tonight, I've stayed up late, sat by the Christmas tree, felt the warmth of the fire, and watched Elf on TV -- all while wrapping Christmas presents beside my husband (my husband of 6 months today, by the way ;). I've got four more days of work until Florida! We are ready for ya!

Thank goodness the end of the week has certainly changed my less-than-impressive December to a magical, whimsical, joyful one. Just remember, there's always light at the end of the tunnel! And if it's December, there are thankfully Christmas lights at the end of the tunnel. I've found them.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

DIY Christmas Monogram Wreath Tutorial

DIY Christmas Wreath Tutorial

Before my mom and grandma came last week, they offered to get J and I a nice Christmas decoration as a gift for our first Christmas as a married couple. I decided we should just make something and after seeing yarn wreath's all over the blog world, I wanted to try!

If you're interested, follow this tutorial:

Supplies:
  • foam wreath
  • yarn (just one roll will do)
  • felt (about 4 sheets)
  • monogram letter
  • natural jute twine (to wrap around letter)
  • berry picks (optional)

I began by wrapping twine around the letter as well as wrapping yarn all the way around the wreath.

I then cut felt (either strips or circles depending on flower type)...

For this type, I cut a strip, folded it and hot glued it to keep it folded. Then cut slits through the folded seam and rolled it up (placing hot glue every couple rolls).

And for this type, I cut a circle, cut it like a spiral, then start rolling up the spiral while gluing it.

I hot glued the corners of the 'B' to the wreath and then arranged my finished flowers and berry picks on the wreath. Note: I stuck the berry picks in the foam and glued them first before gluing the flowers on.

Ta-daaa!

p.s. - an easy way to hang a wreath if you do not have a wreath hanger or if they are too bulky for your door - just attach a ribbon to the top and use a push pin on the top of the door frame. That's also how I hung my fall wreath and it held up all season.
Martha Stewart taught me that one ;)

Tonight, we are off to the fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta to catch Grinch The Musical :)

Happy December, happy weekend and happy crafting!
